GRANDMA-2-GRANDMA is
anon-denominational NGO giving aid to and promoting
self-sufficiency among Tanzanian grandmothers who
have lost their adult children to HIV-AIDS and thus
are raising their orphaned grandchildren. Some of
the grandmas and children are HIV-positive. Our goal
is to provide support and dignity to the grandmothers
and to keep the children in school.
LOCATION:
Mbagala village, 10 miles south of Dar es Salaam,
Tanzania, East Africa
SERVING:
25 grandmothers (“bibis”) and their 80-plus
AIDS-orphaned grandchildren
SERVICES:
Help with food, clothing, shelter, medical care,
school fees and uniforms; communal housing for homeless;
training to create products to sell
HISTORY:
Begun in 2005 as an extension of Bibi Jann Children’s
Care Trust (which had built a day care/primary school
in Mabagala) after discovering the dire circumstances
of AIDS orphans raised by their grandmothers. A Bibi
Shop to sell bibi-made products opened in 2008. Communal
housing for at least five families was completed
in 2009. Partnered with The School Fund in 2010 to
finance grandchildren’s educations.
FUTURE
PLANS:
Complete the educations of grandchildren, enroll
more bibi-headed families as current participants
become self-sufficient, increase product sales.
FUNDING:
Donations/grants from individuals, clubs, churches,
schools, companies and charities in primarily the
U.S., Sweden and American Women’s Clubs in
Europe.
